Sergei Lavrov stresses that any agreements will have to be legally binding and inviolable to resolve the conflict

Moscow has declared that it is ready to negotiate on the Ukrainian issue, but with one key condition: the resulting agreements must be legally binding and inviolable. This was reiterated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with the Tass news agency, where he stressed that Russia has always been ready for dialogue, but only on the condition that the agreements are solid and lasting, capable of eliminating the root causes of the conflict.

Lavrov added that any negotiations must include a mechanism to make the agreements impossible to breach. ‘We can only talk about reliable and legally binding agreements,’ he said, stressing that Russia is not willing to make concessions on this crucial issue.

Furthermore, the minister expressed dissatisfaction with the proposals put forward by the team of US President-elect Donald Trump. The latter had suggested postponing Ukraine’s NATO membership for 20 years and introducing a peacekeeping contingent consisting of the EU and Great Britain in the country. Lavrov made it clear that Moscow did not agree with these solutions, considering them insufficient to resolve the situation.
