Sila’s tragedy and the health emergency in the Gaza Strip
An infant died today in Gaza due to cold weather, marking the fourth death of an infant in similar circumstances in recent days. According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, food shortages among mothers are exacerbating health problems among babies, straining medical facilities and emergency services in the Strip.
Sila’s story
While the world was celebrating Christmas, in a freezing tent near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, little Sila froze to death. Born only three weeks ago, Sila passed away after a night spent under a tent warmed only by the bodies of her parents. The father, Mahmoud al-Faseeh, recounted that in the morning the child was unconscious, her face and lips bruised.
Other deaths and the health situation
Sila’s tragic story is not an isolated case. The head of pediatrics at Nasser Hospital reported that in recent days two other newborns have died due to the cold weather. The situation is critical, with temperatures dropping below freezing and families forced to live in tents.
Israeli tensions and raids
Meanwhile, hopes for a cease-fire in Gaza seem to be receding. Palestinian Al-Quds TV reported that five of its journalists were killed in an Israeli raid on Nuseirat. The IDF claimed to have hit a vehicle carrying an Islamic Jihad terrorist cell.
Negotiations and mutual accusations
Israeli families continue to struggle for the return of their detained loved ones to Gaza. A group of family members accused the government of not doing enough to secure the hostages’ release. Negotiations between Hamas and Israel have stalled, with both sides accusing each other of stalling negotiations.
Attacks in Yemen
The Israeli government has stepped up its attacks in Yemen, hitting infrastructure used by the Houthi regime. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus risked his life during an attack on Sanaa airport. Netanyahu said Israel will continue operations until the work is completed.
