The US president points the finger at European policies on big tech and warns: tariffs of up to 70% for some countries. Additional measures also for BRICS countries

US President Donald Trump has announced that within two days the European Union will receive an official letter indicating the tariffs that will come into effect on 1 August. ‘They probably have two days left to send their letter,’ he said during a cabinet meeting, adding that, in his view, ‘a letter means an agreement’.

Trump reiterated his dissatisfaction with European policies towards US technology companies, stressing that the new tariffs will be ‘fair and low,’ but that for some countries the tariffs could be as high as 60-70%.

The president confirmed that he has already sent similar letters to several countries, including Japan and South Korea, and that more will be sent in the coming days. In a post on Truth, he emphasised in capital letters that the tariffs will be payable from 1 August without exception: ‘There have been no changes to this date and there will be no changes. All money will be due and payable from 1 August. No extensions will be granted.’

Finally, Trump also announced new measures against the member countries of the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other associates): ‘Very soon they will receive additional tariffs of 10%,’ he said. ‘The BRICS were created to hurt us, to weaken our dollar. If they want to play that game, we will play it too.’
