US president presses for immediate truce, but warns: ‘If anyone plays dirty, we’ll leave’

Donald Trump today called for a ‘quick deal’ between Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict and ‘save lives’, estimating 2,500 deaths a week. Speaking from the White House, the US president reiterated the need to speed up negotiations, adding: ‘If for any reason either side makes it very difficult to come to an understanding, we will tell them they are fools and horrible people, and we will let it go’.

Responding to a question about a possible stalling by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said, ‘I hope not, I will let you know in a little while if that is the case.’ He went on to assure that no one is fooling the US: ‘My whole life has been one big negotiation and I know when that happens. This time I see enthusiasm on both sides to stop the war’.

During the conference, an unscheduled outburst interrupted the president. While he was talking about Iran, claiming that Tehran ‘cannot have a nuclear weapon’, a guest of the newly appointed head of Medicare and Medicaid, Mehmet Oz, appeared to faint in the Oval Office. Oz immediately approached, the young woman staggered to her feet and was escorted out by two people. The reporters were removed and Trump interrupted.
