The plan, which is expected to be presented in Cairo, also envisages Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the arrival of aid and shared civil governance
Hamas is preparing to present a new ceasefire proposal to Israel in an attempt to reach a lasting agreement to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip. According to reports in the Saudi daily Asharq Al-Awsat, the proposal is expected to be formalised in Cairo with the arrival of the Hamas delegation in the Egyptian capital.
At the heart of the plan would be the one-stage release of all Israeli hostages still held in the Strip, in exchange for an agreed number of Palestinian prisoners. The document also envisages the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza areas according to the agreements reached in previous ceasefire talks, the suspension of military operations, and the reopening of humanitarian aid flows.
Hamas would also aim to obtain a five-year ceasefire, internationally guaranteed, and the creation of a technocratic committee to manage the civil governance of the Strip, in line with a proposal put forward by Egypt in recent months. Finally, there would be no lack of openness to a possible reconciliation agreement with Fatah.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains dramatic. In Gaza City, ten people, including infants, were killed in an Israeli attack on a school housing displaced people, Haaretz reports. Several others were injured. Another attack, which took place in Khan Younis, left one person dead and five injured by an Israeli drone.
Tensions also existed along the borders: the Israeli army reported that a ballistic missile launched from Yemen towards the north of the country was ‘probably successfully intercepted’. No direct injuries were reported, but some civilians were injured while seeking refuge.
