Hamas rejects US proposal, envoy Witkoff: ‘Unacceptable response, it’s a step backwards’
Steve Witkoff stresses the importance of accepting the negotiating framework proposed by the United States to start proximity talks and a temporary 60-day ceasefire
Hamas’ response to the US proposal was described as “totally unacceptable” by US envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff. On X, Witkoff highlighted how this position represents a step backwards in peace efforts.
The American envoy reiterated that Hamas should accept the framework proposed by the United States as the basis for proximity talks, which could begin as early as next week. This framework, Witkoff stressed, is the only way to reach an immediate 60-day ceasefire agreement.
The temporary ceasefire provides for the release of half of the living hostages and the return of the bodies of half of those who have died to their families. During the truce period, substantive negotiations conducted in good faith could also begin to reach a final and permanent agreement.
