SpaceX calls off ‘Golden Dome’ project: ‘We are aiming for Mars’
Elon Musk’s company will not bid for Trump’s desired defence system modelled on Israel’s Iron Dome: ‘If the President asks for help, we will respond, but we hope other companies will step in’
SpaceX will not take part in the bidding for the new US missile defence system dubbed ‘Golden Dome’, a project wanted by President Donald Trump and inspired by the Israeli Iron Dome. This emerges from a comment posted on X (formerly Twitter), in which the Elon Musk-led company distances itself from the initiative.
‘We want to take humanity to Mars’
‘Our clear preference would be to stay focused on getting humanity to Mars,’ the post reads. A statement that makes clear SpaceX’s desire not to deviate from its strategic priorities related to space exploration and colonisation of the red planet.
The company makes it clear that if the President asks for direct involvement, ‘we would do it’, but hopes that ‘other companies’ will be in charge of the defence project.
The context of the project
The ‘Golden Dome’ represents one of the new Trump administration’s ambitious defence objectives, with the intention of strengthening the protection of US territory from missile threats. The interception network, according to rumours, should replicate the functioning of the Iron Dome already operating in Israel.
For the time being, however, SpaceX is calling off, emphasising once again its focus on space missions and orbiting infrastructure.
