EU ready for action against Russian ‘shadow fleet’ suspected of submarine sabotage
Kaja Kallas announces stronger action after the alleged sabotage of the electricity cable between Finland and Estonia by a Russian ship
The European Union has announced plans to take ‘stronger action’ against the feared Russian ‘shadow fleet’, suspected of being responsible for sabotaging the Estlink 2 undersea electricity cable between Estonia and Finland. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, told Die Welt newspaper that the EU bloc is planning stronger measures to counter the risks posed by these ships.
The electrical cable, which was damaged on Wednesday, has raised fears among the Finnish authorities, who suspect an act of sabotage. The oil tanker Eagle S, flying the flag of the Cook Islands, was detained because it was held responsible for the damage. According to the EU, the ship could be part of the so-called Russian ‘shadow fleet’, used to circumvent sanctions on oil transportation and finance Moscow’s war budget.
Kallas, former premier of Estonia, pointed out that sabotage in Europe has increased since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. ‘These attacks are not isolated incidents, but part of a pattern aimed at targeting our digital and energy infrastructure,’ Kallas said, stressing the urgency of coordinated EU action to counter these threats.
