The US president describes the Russian leader’s positions as ‘insignificant’ and reaffirms his support for Kiev after new contacts with Zelensky. Tougher sanctions may be on the way

Harsh words from US President Donald Trump towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a press conference before a cabinet meeting, Trump called Putin’s position in talks on the war in Ukraine ‘bullshit’, adding: ‘He’s always nice, but insignificant.’

The comment comes a few days after a telephone conversation between the two leaders, at the end of which Trump said he felt “very disappointed” with the Kremlin’s attitude.

According to reports, after his most recent contacts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump decided to give new impetus to the supply of defence systems to Kiev. American support could therefore intensify, in a context in which Washington is returning to a more explicitly critical stance towards Moscow.

The US president also announced that he is considering introducing “very tough” sanctions against Russia. “Putin is killing a lot of people. And many of them are his own soldiers,” Trump said, suggesting that Russia’s strategy in Ukraine remains one of the main issues in American foreign policy.
