Trump puts the brakes on Ukraine ceasefire: after Russian attack on Sumy, negotiations seem to be stalled

Moscow attacks Sumy leaving 34 dead and 117 wounded as the Kremlin downplays prospects for a quick deal with Washington. Trump blames Biden, Zelensky and Putin for the outbreak of war: ‘I’m working to stop it’

After the devastating Russian attack on the Ukrainian town of Sumy, which left 34 dead and 117 injured, US President Donald Trump’s stated goal of reaching a comprehensive ceasefire and a lasting peace agreement in Ukraine is receding. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said the ongoing talks with Washington were ‘progressing well’, but ruled out imminent developments, suggesting a wait-and-see attitude on Moscow’s part. On the temporary moratorium on attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Peskov reiterated that the decision would be up to Vladimir Putin, accusing Kiev of failing to abide by the terms of the agreement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated its readiness for negotiations only if based on the recognition of the ‘modern realities’ and the ‘root causes’ of the conflict. According to the Institute for the Study of War, these conditions basically amount to the surrender of Kiev and the imposition of a pro-Russian government. The Kremlin also continues to reject the approach advocated by Trump, based on an immediate ceasefire as a preliminary step towards a broader peace.

Isw highlights the lack of credible monitoring mechanisms to verify possible violations of the ceasefire, noting how Moscow seems to be exploiting this very absence to blame Kiev for unproven attacks. In this context, Russian officials do not rule out false flag attacks to justify new escalations.

On the political level, Trump reiterated on Truth that the war ‘is not his’, accusing Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky of doing a ‘horrible job’ in preventing it. While admitting that Putin should not have started the invasion, he placed the primary responsibility on the Biden administration. After the attack in Sumy, the former president called what happened ‘horrible’, but argued that it may have been a mistake. Speaking to the president of El Salvador, Trump said: ‘You don’t start a war with someone 20 times your size and then hope they give you missiles,’ stressing the urgency of ending the conflict.
