During a dinner with Republican members of Congress, he celebrated the event in defiant tones: ‘Countries are calling us to kiss my thatside. They’re dying to make a deal,’ he said, using the phrase “kissing my that” that has sparked and enthised the audience.

The new tariffs, above 10 per cent, are aimed at a wide range of business partners. ‘Every leader in the world picked up the phone to ask me: please, let’s make a deal. I will do anything,’ Trump continued, emphasising the strong position of the US.

There was no shortage of domestic criticism: the president even attacked some members of his own party. ‘They think Congress should be the one to negotiate. But you don’t know how to do it like I do. If Congress takes over, you sell out America and go down the drain,’ he said.
