White House confirms Saturday meeting in Oman on nuclear programme. Leavitt: ‘Sanctions already re-imposed, Tehran has a choice to make’

The White House has confirmed that the talks with Iran scheduled for Saturday in Muscat, Oman, will be ‘direct’, marking a significant step in the dossier on Iran’s nuclear programme. This was stated by presidential spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, underlining President Donald Trump’s hard line towards Tehran.

“The president has already reimposed crippling sanctions on the Iranian regime. Now Iran has a clear choice: it can negotiate a deal with the president, or it will pay with hell,” Leavitt stated in a stark tone, reiterating that there will be no room for dilatory or ambiguous negotiations.

A political ultimatum

The message sent by the United States is aimed at pushing Tehran to sit down at the table with clear conditions. Washington aims to obtain concrete guarantees on the freezing of the most sensitive nuclear activities and greater transparency in relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The choice of Muscat

The venue for the talks, the Omani capital, has often been used as neutral ground for the most sensitive negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The choice confirms the willingness of the United States to maintain an open diplomatic channel, without softening its demands.
