China, military escalates on Taiwan: amid maneuvers, record spending and future scenarios

Beijing continues to strengthen the defense sector with a growing budget and new military strategies as Taiwan prepares for possible conflict scenarios by 2027

China continues to exert political and military pressure on Taiwan, intensifying exercises and expanding its arsenal. Recent maneuvers in the Western Pacific, combined with hybrid warfare strategies, show Beijing’s determination to reassert its control over the region. Taiwan, bolstered by international and especially U.S. support, strengthens its defenses as fears of an invasion in 2027 become more concrete.

Rise in military spending: Beijing aims for war record

For the third consecutive year, China announced a 7.2 percent increase in military spending, bringing the official budget to about $250 billion. However, Pentagon sources estimate that the real value could be as much as 40 percent higher, considering spending items concealed under other sectors. Beijing thus continues its path of modernizing the People’s Liberation Army, aiming for a state-of-the-art military force by 2035.

New technologies and strategies: the Chinese military power is evolving

Strengthening China’s armed forces comes through the development of new warfare technologies. Recently, China tested a J-35A stealth fighter, launched the amphibious assault ship Sichuan, and introduced an innovative barge system to facilitate amphibious landing operations. In addition, the Dragon is experimenting with an underwater weapon that can shear undersea cables, putting telecommunications and power transport at risk.

Scenario 2027: Taiwan simulates a Chinese invasion

The year 2027 is the date considered crucial for a possible invasion of Taiwan. The island’s Defense Ministry has confirmed that military exercises planned for July will simulate a Chinese attack, a clear signal of Taipei’s growing concern. The Taiwanese government has announced an increase in its defense budget, aiming to exceed 3 percent of GDP, and continues to strengthen strategic ties with the United States.

Geopolitics and tensions: what prospects for the future?

While Beijing justifies its rearmament as necessary to ensure domestic stability, the international community views Chinese military escalation with growing concern. The use of so-called “gray zone tactics,” which include pressure actions without escalating into open conflict, is a key element of Chinese strategy. According to analyst Timothy Heath of the think tank RAND Corporation, the expansion of China’s war apparatus would serve more to strengthen Communist Party control than to prepare for imminent war.
