Chinese exercises near Taiwan: Beijing intensifies military pressure
China deploys the aircraft carrier Shandong in exercises near Taiwan to test ‘blocking’ and ‘multidimensional control’ capabilities
The Chinese military began military exercises today in the waters surrounding Taiwan, deploying its aircraft carrier Shandong to test the autonomous island’s ‘blockade’ capabilities. The manoeuvres involved extensive ship-to-air coordination, with the aim of gaining air superiority and conducting attacks on land and sea targets. The Beijing Army’s Eastern Command emphasised the importance of the operations to test ‘multidimensional blockade and control’ capabilities around Taiwan.
According to the Ministry of Defence in Taipei, at least 27 aircraft, 21 warships and 10 Chinese Coast Guard ships have been deployed in the area, a growing sign of increasing Chinese pressure on the region. The Chinese government has declared that the ‘punishment’ of Taiwan will continue until the island gives up its attempts at independence.
The Beijing government had previously warned that efforts to secure Taiwan’s independence could lead to open conflict, highlighting the growing tension in the region.
