Pope Francis continues his hospitalisation at Gemelli, situation remains stable

The Pontiff hospitalised for bilateral pneumonia shows signs of improvement, but the doctors’ caution remains high. A new update is expected on Monday evening

Pope Francis spent a quiet night, the Vatican confirmed today, Sunday 9 March. The Holy Father has been hospitalised at the Policlinico Gemelli since 14 February due to bilateral pneumonia. While the prognosis remains reserved, the signs of improvement observed in recent days give hope. However, caution remains high and doctors will not issue a new bulletin until Monday evening. In the meantime, the Vatican Press Office will provide an update on the Pope’s day in the late afternoon.

The last medical bulletin issued last night reported stability in the Pontiff’s condition, with a good response to the ongoing therapy. A gradual and slight improvement can be observed, with improving gas exchange and stable haematochemical and haemocytocritometric examination values. Although Pope Francis has remained apyretic – that is, without fever – the doctors are maintaining a cautious approach, aware that the risk of new complications has not yet been completely averted.

Vatican sources stress the importance of continuing to monitor the Pope’s clinical course in the coming days.
