The son of the last Shah of Persia spoke out on human rights, women’s struggle, and the environmental crisis in Iran

Reza Pahlavi, eldest son of the last Shah of Persia, delivered an impassioned speech at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy, highlighting the struggle of the Iranian people against a regime that he said has opressed the nation for more than four decades. During his speech, he covered crucial issues such as the violation of women’s rights, religious repression, artistic censorship and the environmental disaster in Iran. Pahlavi accused the Islamic Republic of distorting history and denounced the use of violence against those fighting for freedom.

Particular attention was paid to the plight of Iranian women, who are not only fighting against the imposition of the hijab, but struggling to regain their dignity and equality. He also condemned the discriminatory treatment of religious minorities, such as Bahá’ís and Christians, and the brutality toward intellectuals and artists, who are accused of expressing divergent ideas. Pahlavi then evoked the 2022 uprising sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, stressing the unity of the Iranian people in responding to the regime’s violence.

He also raised the issue of the environmental devastation caused by the regime, describing how corruption and mismanagement have created ecological disasters that threaten millions of lives. Pahlavi urged the international community to join the Iranian people in their struggle against a regime that he said is threatening not only Iran but also global peace and stability.

Concluding his speech, Pahlavi appealed for international mobilization, calling for support from the G20 governments and the Iranian diaspora. “Our people do not ask for your pity. It is asking for your partnership,” he said.
