Confirmed in the West Midlands: patient is in good condition, while authorities take preventive measures to contain the outbreak

A human case of avian influenza A H5N1 has been confirmed in the West Midlands, England. The infected person contracted the infection on a farm, coming into close and prolonged contact with numerous infected birds. According to the Uk Health Security Agency (Ukhsa), bird-to-human transmission is rare and the risk to the general population remains very low.

Patient in good condition, monitoring started

The affected person, currently in good health, was admitted to a specialised infectious diseases ward. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (Apha) had previously identified an outbreak of H5N1 in a flock, leading to the monitoring of persons who came into contact with the birds. All contacts at risk received antiviral treatment to prevent possible infection.

A rare and controlled event

H5N1 avian influenza, while highly contagious among birds, is rarely transmitted to humans. The identified strain, DI.2, is known to circulate in birds in the UK and is unrelated to those found in other regions of the world. According to Christine Middlemiss, UK Chief Veterinary Officer, the case is closely linked to specific circumstances, and strict biosecurity measures have been taken to contain the outbreak.

Preparedness and prevention

To ensure public safety, the UK government has stepped up controls and updated preparedness plans, including the availability of the H5 vaccine for possible emergencies. Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Adviser at Ukhsa, emphasised that the UK has robust systems in place to detect and manage cases of spillover infection early.
