Copernicus report: record heatwaves and precipitation worldwide

According to the annual Global Climate Highlights 2024 report by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the year 2024 was the hottest on record globally, with temperatures exceeding pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5°C for the first time. The average global temperature reached 15.10°C, which is 0.72°C higher than the average for the period 1991-2020.

Carlo Buontempo, director of C3S, emphasised that humanity has the opportunity to change the climate trajectory, but rapid and concrete action is needed. The report highlights how extreme weather events, heat waves and heavy rainfall have caused suffering to millions of people around the world.

2024 also saw a record increase in atmospheric water vapour and a spike in sea surface temperature, resulting in severe droughts and fires in several regions of the world.
