The US State Department intervenes on the arrest of the Italian journalist in Iran, denouncing the political use of detainees by the Iranian regime

The United States has intervened in the case of the arrest of Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist detained in Iran. In a statement to ‘Repubblica’, a State Department spokesperson expressed concern over the arrest, which comes just days after an Iranian citizen was detained in Italy on 16 December for smuggling drone components. The US reiterated its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners arbitrarily detained in Iran, highlighting how the Iranian regime often uses foreign nationals as tools of political pressure.

‘There is no justification for these arrests, journalists must be protected while they do their vital work, often in dangerous conditions,’ the spokesman said. He also emphasised that the US will not drop its extradition request for Mohammed Abedini, who is accused of trafficking in drone components.

Finally, the State Department condemned Iran’s support for terrorist groups and the use of advanced and lethal drones, calling such actions a serious threat to regional stability. ‘We will continue to use all tools at our disposal to counter Iran’s destabilising actions,’ the spokesman concluded.
