Trump: no territorial divisions between Russia and Ukraine
At the summit in Alaska with Putin, the US president is only aiming for a ceasefire
Donald Trump has told European leaders that at tomorrow’s summit in Alaska with Vladimir Putin, he will not discuss any possibility of territorial division between Russia and Ukraine. The news was revealed by NBC News, citing two European sources and three other people informed about yesterday’s video call between the US president, European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump’s stated goal is to obtain a ceasefire from Putin, which all leaders consider a precondition for starting peace negotiations. However, some sources report that the American president does not seem optimistic about the outcome of the Anchorage meeting.
Kiev’s position
When asked, Trump’s spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt avoided going into details about the conversations, reiterating that the president wants an end to the war and the killings. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, after talks with his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp, wrote on X that lasting peace is only possible with transatlantic unity, an immediate ceasefire and pressure on Russia. Zelensky, meanwhile, arrived in London to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of the anticipated face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin.
Attacks and counter-offensives
On the ground, Ukraine struck the Russian regions of Volgograd and Belgorod with drones, causing fires — including one at a large refinery — and three injuries. Moscow responded by announcing the destruction of the Sapsan ballistic missile programme, accusing Germany of financing it with the assistance of foreign specialists. According to the FSB, the facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy regions, along with four Patriot launchers, have been neutralised.
