Storms and tornadoes in the USA: at least 21 dead in Missouri and Kentucky
Wave of bad weather devastates central US for third consecutive day. Thousands without power
At least 21 people have lost their lives as violent storms hit the central US, particularly Missouri and Kentucky, for the third consecutive day. Weather conditions remain critical, and the forecast for the weekend does not suggest any improvement.
The governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, confirmed the deaths of at least 14 people in his state and spoke of “numerous serious injuries”, specifying that the death toll is set to rise. The storms have left more than 100,000 people without electricity.
The situation is also very serious in Missouri, where five people have lost their lives in St. Louis, hit by an alleged tornado detected by radar. Two more fatalities were recorded in the south of the state, in areas affected by widespread devastation. Entire neighbourhoods have been razed to the ground, with homes destroyed and landscapes completely transformed.
Local authorities and civil protection are continuing rescue and monitoring operations, while the alert remains high for possible new tornado formations in the coming hours.
