Impeachment attempt failed. Protests outside parliament. President’s apology for martial law
The impeachment motion against South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was rejected by Parliament, as the 200 votes out of 300 needed to proceed were not reached. Only 195 MPs participated in the vote, rendering the decision null and void. Outside Parliament, crowds demonstrated protesting the result.
The opposition needed eight additional votes to pass the motion, but MPs from the ruling party, opposed to impeachment, left the chamber to avoid voting. At the same time, the measure calling for an investigation into allegations against the first lady, Kim Keon Hee, was also defeated.
President Yoon offered a public apology for the proclamation of martial law, which was withdrawn a few hours later, promising that it would not be repeated. However, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung called the president’s speech disappointing and called for an early end to his term.
