Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, over 2,000 dead. Evacuations in Bangkok
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake has claimed thousands of lives. Woman found alive after 60 hours under rubble
The death toll from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday is worsening. According to the Wall Street Journal, the death toll in Myanmar has risen to at least 2,028, while the number of injured has risen to 3,408. The figure was reported by the Burmese military junta.
Preliminary estimates by the US Geological Survey indicate that the death toll could exceed ten thousand and that economic losses are likely to exceed the value of the national GDP.
Meanwhile, a woman was extracted alive from the rubble of the Great Wall Hotel in Mandalay after 60 hours under the debris. This was announced by the Chinese embassy in a statement on Facebook, pointing out that the rescue, which lasted five hours, involved Chinese, Russian and local rescue teams. The woman is in stable condition.
In Bangkok, employees of several government buildings were evacuated again after cracks and vibrations were detected upon returning to the office. Thousands of people took to the streets. The affected buildings include the government complex, the Thai Stock Exchange, the social security office and the TMBThanachart Bank. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt reported that the earthquake caused structural damage in about 170 buildings in the Thai capital.
