Iran denies plans to kill Trump: “Never attempted, it’s just Iranophobia”
President Pezeshkian dismisses accusations and accuses Israel of fomenting Iranophobia
Iran has ‘never’ attempted to hatch plans to kill Donald Trump, according to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in an interview with NBC News. ‘It’s another one of those plans that Israel and other countries make to promote Iranophobia,’ Pezeshkian said, adding, ’Iran has never tried or planned to kill anyone. At least to the best of my knowledge’. When Lester Holt pressed him with the question, ‘Are you saying that there has never been an Iranian plot to kill Donald Trump?’ just days before the tycoon’s return to the White House, Pezeshkian replied firmly, ‘Absolutely not.’
In November, the US Justice Department indicted an Iranian in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Trump, linked to revenge for the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani, head of the Quds Forces, was killed in a US raid in Baghdad in January 2020, during the first Trump Administration.
In 2018, Trump decided to withdraw the US from the Iran nuclear deal, reinstating sanctions against Tehran. In response, Iran began backtracking on commitments made in the deal. In recent days, Iranian representatives and the E3 countries (UK, France and Germany) met in Geneva for the second round of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme in less than two months.
In the interview, Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran is open to dialogue, but stressed that the problem is not the dialogue itself, but the failure of other nations to fulfil their commitments. ‘We have kept all our commitments,’ Pezeshkian said, lamenting that the other side has not done the same. ‘We fear that, despite the talks, the aim is to overthrow our government, rather than to solve the problems.’
