Mexico, mass grave with over 200 bags of human remains discovered in Guadalajara
It is the largest clandestine discovery of 2025. They belong to at least 35 victims, but the numbers are feared to be much higher
At least 215 bags containing human remains have been discovered in the largest clandestine mass grave found so far this year in Mexico. The discovery was made in the Las Agujas area, on the outskirts of the city of Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco.
According to initial estimates, the remains belong to at least 35 people, but search teams fear that the toll could rise. The alarm was raised by the collective “Guerreros Buscadores” (Warrior Searchers), composed mainly of women who have been searching for their missing relatives for years. The group has called on the authorities to continue their investigations to verify the presence of further victims.
Experts from the Jalisco State Institute of Forensic Sciences are working on site alongside members of civic associations in what is expected to be a long and complex operation.
Mexico continues to grapple with the tragedy of missing persons: at least 127,000 have disappeared since the start of the war on organised crime in 2006. To date, this conflict has caused more than 500,000 deaths, leaving deep wounds in civil society and the country’s institutional fabric.
