New UK Sanctions against Russia: ‘Biggest Package since the Start of the Conflict’
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy will announce a major set of sanctions to target Russia’s military machine and strengthen support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia continues its raids in Ukraine, causing new casualties
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has announced that tomorrow ‘the biggest package of sanctions against Russia since the start of the conflict’ will be unveiled. The aim of these measures is to hit Russia’s military machine hard and reduce the economic revenues that fuel the war against Ukraine. ITV News reported this, pointing out that London intends to work closely with its American and European partners to achieve a ‘just and sustainable peace’, recognising the importance of Ukraine’s involvement in the process.
Lammy stressed that the current moment is ‘critical’ not only for Ukraine, but also for Britain and the whole of Europe. The UK, he added, would redouble its support for Ukraine, and reaffirmed London’s commitment to provide £3 billion a year in military support to ensure that Ukraine is in the best position to defend itself. In addition, the UK would be prepared to send British troops as peacekeepers if necessary.
Meanwhile, Russia continued with its military attacks. Last night, a missile raid hit the Ukrainian town of Kryvy Rih, located in the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing one person and displacing five others. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the military administration in the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reported that among the injured was a woman in critical condition. The attack caused severe damage to the city’s civil infrastructure, including residential buildings, an old people’s home, a church and various industrial facilities.
On the Russian side, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, defended Russia’s decision to launch the military operation in Ukraine, stating that ‘time has shown that this difficult decision was the only right and possible one’. In a post on Telegram on the occasion of Defenders of the Fatherland Day, Medvedev emphasised that Russia was forced to ‘defend the motherland’ against the collective West and that the Russian people had stood strong ‘in the fight against the cynical and cruel enemy’.
Finally, Medvedev reiterated that, according to him, the war is not yet over, but its outcome is close, promising that ‘the enemy will be destroyed’ and that ‘the truth will triumph’.
