Elon Musk harshly attacks German President Steinmeier and predicts a ‘monumental’ Afd victory. The reactions of Scholz and Habeck are not long in coming

Elon Musk has once again fuelled the controversy with the German political leadership by intensifying his attacks. In a recent post on Social X, Musk called Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier a ‘tyrant’ and ‘undemocratic’, raising the tone of the debate considerably.

Musk’s prediction of the Afd’s victory

An hour later, Musk commented on two graphs that would show the growth in support for the Afd party compared to other parties and the growing dissatisfaction of Afd voters with democracy. Based on data from the first quarter of 2024, the entrepreneur stated: ‘The Afd will have a monumental victory.

Support for Naomi Seibt and Musk’s political influence

The first of Musk’s two tweets was a comment on a post by influencer Naomi Seibt, already associated with previous endorsements by Musk for the Afd. Seibt, known for her climate change denier positions, is considered an ‘anti-Greta’ and regularly promotes pro-Afd content on social media.

Reactions from German politicians: Scholz and Habeck respond

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in his New Year’s speech, implicitly criticised Musk without naming him directly, saying: ‘It is you, the citizens, who decide the future of Germany. It is not up to the owners of social media’. Vice-chancellor Robert Habeck also attacked Musk, stating: ‘Musk is strengthening those who weaken Europe. A weak Europe is in the interests of those who see regulation as an obstacle to their power’.
