US, fewer weapons to Ukraine: Pentagon announces funding cut in next budget

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirms reduction in military assistance to Kiev to the House: ‘A negotiated solution is needed’

The Trump administration will reduce funding for military assistance to Ukraine in the upcoming Defense Department budget. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said this during a House hearing, confirming a significant shift in U.S. foreign and strategic policy.

“This administration has a very different view of the conflict. We believe that a peaceful, negotiated settlement is in the best interest of both sides and also of our country,” Hegseth said, clarifying the White House’s orientation toward a gradual reduction in direct military engagement in the conflict between Kiev and Moscow.

The cut in funding will concretely translate into a reduced supply of weapons and military systems to Ukraine, just as the country continues to face Russian encroachment on the eastern front. The new budget thus marks a sharp change from the line taken in previous years, in which Washington had been the main military supporter of the Ukrainian government.

The decision is bound to reignite the internal debate over the U.S. role in the war in Europe and the geopolitical consequences of a gradual disengagement by Washington.
