Venezuela, Maduro’s party triumphs in elections amid opposition boycott

The United Socialist Party gets 82.7% of the vote and wins 23 out of 24 governorships. The only one excluded is Cojedes

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Psuv), led by President Nicolás Maduro, achieved a clear victory in the legislative and regional elections held yesterday. According to an announcement by the National Electoral Council, the Psuv and its allies collected 82.68% of the vote and won 23 of the country’s 24 governorates.

A result that, barring any surprises, will also guarantee the Chavista majority full control of the National Assembly.

The elections were marked by a boycott by the main opposition forces, which denounced in advance the absence of democratic guarantees and transparency in the electoral process.

The only state that resisted the Psuv’s advance was the central-western state of Cojedes, where the opposition won the only governorship not in the hands of Maduro’s party.

The electoral round further strengthens the Venezuelan president’s control over the country’s institutions, in a political context already severely marked by repression, economic crisis and mass migration.
