Emergency order to prevent the Government Efficiency Commission from gaining control of the federal payment system

A US federal judge has issued an emergency order to prevent the Government Efficiency Commission (DOGE), a government body led by Elon Musk, from accessing the Treasury Department’s financial data and payment system.

The decision, made by Judge Paul A. Engelmayer, prohibits all politically appointed officials, special agents of the government, and employees of federal agencies outside the Treasury from accessing this information. The measure was taken to avoid national financial security risks and to ensure that control over payment flows remains under the authority of the Department.

The Government Efficiency Commission, wanted by Trump and led by Musk, established with the aim of optimising the management of public resources, had put forward a proposal to reform and digitise the Treasury’s payment system. However, the project raised doubts among security experts and federal officials, who were concerned about a possible weakening of the protection of sensitive data.

The order marks a significant stop for Musk’s commission, which aimed at a more technological and automated handling of federal funds. The case remains open and it will now be up to the federal authorities to assess whether the DOGE plan can actually improve administrative efficiency without jeopardising the economic security of the United States.
