President suspended for trying to impose martial law. Police summons him for questioning, while the leader of the ruling party resigns

South Korea’s Constitutional Court has officially started the impeachment process against President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was suspended from office after a failed attempt to impose martial law in the country. The court spokesman announced that ‘the first deliberative meeting on the impeachment motion began at 10 a.m.’, reporting the start of the proceedings to the AFP news agency.

South Korean police have summoned Yoon for questioning, scheduled for Wednesday, on charges of insurrection and abuse of power. According to Yonhap news agency, the initiative was taken by a joint investigation team consisting of the police, the Corruption Investigation Bureau for Senior Officials and the Defence Ministry’s investigation unit.

Meanwhile, the political crisis also affected the ruling People Power Party. Han Dong-hoon, leader of the party, announced his resignation following the uproar triggered by Yoon’s impeachment. ‘I am resigning as leader of the People Power Party,’ Han said at a press conference, adding, ’I sincerely apologise to all the people who have suffered because of the emergency martial law.
