Syria’s highest peak under Israeli control: strategic and security implications
Israel has recently gained control of Mount Hermon, Syria’s highest peak at 2,814 meters (8,814 feet). This strategic move places Damascus, the Syrian capital, just 40 kilometers away, in full Israeli artillery range. For decades, Mount Hermon, one of the Middle East’s most important natural fortresses, had been a barrier to Israeli defensive capabilities. Now, control of the peak offers Israel an unprecedented geographic advantage.
Elimination of radar vulnerabilities
Prior to this conquest, Israeli radars suffered from a significant “blind spot,” especially in surveillance of Mount Hermon and parts of Lebanon. This limitation was often exploited by Iranian drones, which penetrated Israeli territory at low altitude. Hostile forces, such as ISIS, HTS, Iran or Hezbollah, now find themselves exposed to more effective control through the use of drones, precision missiles and laser-guided bombs.
