LIVE – Artemis II sets record distance from Earth, surpassing Apollo 13
NASA crew travels beyond 400,000 kilometers, breaking the 1970 record
Artemis II has set a new record distance from Earth, surpassing the milestone reached in 1970 by Apollo 13. The four astronauts traveled more than 400,171 kilometers from the planet, marking the farthest distance ever reached by humans in space.
The crew includes Americans Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Reid Wiseman, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The achievement was confirmed by NASA.
“The Artemis II astronauts have reached their closest point to the Moon, traveling farther from Earth than humans have ever gone before,” the agency said in a statement during the mission.
The previous record was held by Apollo 13, which reached that distance 56 years ago under emergency conditions. The crew was forced to alter its trajectory after an oxygen tank exploded during flight—an incident remembered for the line, “Houston, we have a problem.”
