King Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and children look out from the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the passing of the Red Arrows and the RAF fleet in front of thousands of people

London celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in Europe today with a military parade and a spectacular aerial flyover that culminated over the sky at Buckingham Palace. King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Kate and their children stood on the royal balcony to greet the crowd and watch the Royal Air Force aircraft fly over.

To welcome them, a packed square: thousands of people along the Mall and in front of the palace, including cadets, veterans and guests of honour, already present in the boxes reserved for the morning parade. The royals took their places on the balcony just as the flyover began, accompanied by the notes of the national anthem.

The London sky coloured by the Union Flag

The air show lasted five minutes but required massive military coordination: aircraft of various types were mobilised from RAF bases across the UK, including two Lancaster bombers, two Typhoon jets, a Poseidon patrol plane and a C-17 Globemaster III.

Closing the formation, as per tradition, were the Red Arrows: the Red Arrows flew over the centre of the capital leaving the iconic red, white and blue trails in the sky, a reminder of the colours of the Union Flag. A solemn and choreographic moment that attracted the lenses of photographers as the royal family looked upwards, following the passage of the jets.
