Greenland, Nielsen to Trump: ‘We will never be a property to be bought’

New prime minister rejects US statements on annexation and reaffirms Arctic island’s autonomy

Greenland’s new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, declared today, Sunday 27 April, that the island will never be ‘property’ available for purchase. Speaking at a press conference alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during his first official visit to Copenhagen since taking office, Nielsen harshly criticised recent statements from the United States about annexing the autonomous territory.

“We will never, ever be property that anyone can buy, and this is the message that I think is most important to understand,” Nielsen said, calling such assumptions “a lack of respect” for Greenland and its autonomy.
