The quake occurred off the island of New Britain at a depth of 10 km. The alert concerns possible tidal waves along the coast

A violent earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck the area off the coast of the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea today, Friday 4 April. This was reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which detected the seismic event at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre immediately issued an alert for possible tidal waves of between one and three metres. The earthquake may have generated a tsunami capable of hitting the coastal areas of the island and surrounding areas, although no official reports of damage or casualties are yet available.

Papua New Guinea is located in the so-called “Fire Belt” of the Pacific, one of the most active seismic zones in the world, subject to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. Local authorities and international bodies are monitoring the situation.
