Sean Penn Meets Zelensky in Kyiv After Skipping Oscar Ceremony

The American actor visited the Ukrainian capital after missing the March 15 Academy Awards in Los Angeles, where he won Best Supporting Actor

American actor Sean Penn traveled to Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky after missing the 98th Academy Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles on March 15. Penn won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Una battaglia dopo l’altra, marking his third Academy Award. Despite the recognition, the actor did not attend the ceremony.

Instead, he was in the Ukrainian capital meeting Zelensky. The Ukrainian president thanked Penn for the support he has shown Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

Zelensky described the actor as “a true friend of Ukraine,” noting that Penn has stood with the country “since the first day of the full-scale invasion and still does today.”

Penn has visited Ukraine several times since February 2022.

After the meeting, Zelensky shared a photo of the encounter along with a message addressed to the actor: “Sean, thanks to you we know what a true friend of Ukraine is. You have stood with Ukraine since the first day of the full-scale war. This remains true today. And we know you will continue to stand with our country and our people.”
