Argentina declassifies archives on Nazi criminals: Milei government makes secret documents public

President Javier Milei announced the declassification of secret government archives concerning Nazi war criminals who fled to Argentina after World War II

The government of Argentine President Javier Milei has confirmed the declassification of secret archives relating to the presence of Nazi war criminals in Argentina after World War II. This was announced today by Chief of Cabinet Guillermo Francos, who underlined the president’s commitment to make these documents public, a commitment that had been made during a meeting last week with representatives of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre.

During that meeting, President Milei had received a letter from Senator Chuck Grassley, a member of the US Senate Justice Committee, urging Argentina to cooperate in the investigation of Nazi criminals. Historians estimate that around 5,000 Nazi fugitives found refuge in Argentina, including prominent Third Reich figures such as Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele.

The documents now made public may provide new information on the extent of local support that facilitated the arrival and protection of these criminals. Since his inauguration, President Milei has declared his intention to unconditionally align Argentina’s foreign policy with that of the United States and Israel.
