British prime minister discusses steps for lasting peace with Zelensky and Macron, involving the United States
Europe continues to navigate uncertainties and disagreements as peace plans for Ukraine emerge, each with specific proposals and solutions. Against this backdrop, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has developed a plan that emphasizes three key aspects: a strong Ukrainian defense, European-level security guarantees, and crucial U.S. support.
Starmer previewed the details of his plan in an interview with the BBC, revealing that he, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, has already discussed the guidelines with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The next step is for the plan to be submitted to the United States for review and possible support.
The three crucial points of the peace plan
Starmer’s plan is structured around three key elements. First, there is a need for Ukraine to be strong and able to fight back if circumstances require it. “For me, lasting peace means a Ukraine that can fight from a position of strength,” Starmer stressed.
The second point is the need to obtain security guarantees at the European level, a measure to strengthen Ukraine’s position in the long term.
Finally, U.S. support is considered essential to ensure the sustainability of the plan. “This is the package, all three parties must be in place,” Starmer said, adding that he is determined to work hard to achieve these goals.
Collaboration between Britain and France
Starmer confirmed that Britain, along with France, is working together to devise a plan that can end the fighting in Ukraine. Both countries, along with one or two others, will work closely with Ukraine to develop a proposal that will then be discussed with the United States. This collaborative process has been described as a “step in the right direction” by the British premier.
Background and the importance of the United States
An important aspect of the plan is that peace between Ukraine and Russia, according to Starmer, goes through the White House. In a source close to the prime minister, it was reported that Starmer will warn Zelensky and European leaders in London that “there is only one negotiation, the one with President Trump.” According to this view, U.S. support is crucial to the success of the plan.
In this regard, one official said Starmer intends to make European leaders understand that in addition to verbal support, Ukraine now needs concrete actions, such as weapons and tangible aid, rather than political signals.
Von der Leyen: Force is the key to peace
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated her commitment to peace in Ukraine. “The road to peace is strength. Weakness breeds more war,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Von der Leyen added that the European Union would continue to support Ukraine, with increased commitments to European defense.
Support for Meloni’s proposal
In a similar vein, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed support for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s idea of holding a U.S.-EU summit. Tusk said that a meeting between European leaders and the United States is “very necessary” at this time, especially to discuss the differences that have emerged in the wake of Trump’s clash with Zelensky.
