AP rejects Trump’s order to rename the Gulf of Mexico, White House reacts by banning one of its journalists
The White House has denied access to an Associated Press reporter for an event in the Oval Office in response to the agency’s refusal to change the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America,’ as ordered by President Donald Trump.
The AP called the restriction a violation of the First Amendment, denouncing the incident as an attack on press freedom. ‘It is alarming that the Trump administration wants to punish the Associated Press for its independent journalism,’ said Julie Pace, senior vice president and executive editor of the agency.
Trump had signed an executive order in January to impose the new name, but the AP reiterated that ‘Gulf of Mexico’ has been in use for over 400 years and will continue to use it. The journalist’s exclusion marks a further clash between the White House and the press, reigniting the freedom of information debate under the new administration.
