The pro-Russian hacker collective struck Italy during Zelensky’s visit to Rome, claiming the action via Telegram channels

The hacker group NoName057, known for its activity in support of Russia, claimed the DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack that hit several Italian institutional sites in connection with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Rome. The group has been active since early 2022 and has developed specific tools to overload target systems, such as their DDOSIA tool, designed to cause service disruptions through repeated network requests.

The comment of cybersecurity expert Matteo Flora

Matteo Flora, a cybersecurity expert and lecturer in AI security, explained to Adnkronos that NoName057 ‘is a pro-Russia hacktivist group that has been known for years, specialising in DDoS attacks’. Flora added that the collective coordinates via Telegram channels, used both to claim attacks and to disseminate educational material, as well as exploiting GitHub to host their tool and associated repositories.

Collaborations and threats to journalists

The group has long collaborated with other pro-Russian hacker collectives, such as Killnet and XakNet, and their attacks are usually directed at government, media and corporate sites in Ukraine, Europe and North America. In addition to ‘defacement’ attacks, NoName057 is also known to directly threaten journalists, confirming the political and propagandistic nature of their actions.
