Yoon Suk Yeol, suspended from presidency, fails to show up for questioning on attempt to impose martial law. Premier Han Duck Soo assumes the interim

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol failed to show up for questioning requested by the investigative team composed of the Police, the Office for Investigation of Corruption of High-Level Officials, and the Defense Ministry’s Investigative Team. The investigation is linked to Yoon’s attempt to impose martial law last Dec. 3, an exceptional measure that was soon lifted.

The Seoul Parliament, in response to these actions, voted to impeach the president, temporarily suspending him from office pending the Constitutional Court’s decision.

The Constitutional Court’s decision

Yoon’s political fate now depends on South Korea’s Constitutional Court, which is expected to assess the legitimacy of the impeachment. If the Court upholds the procedure, Yoon could be permanently dismissed, but if not, his suspension would be declared unconstitutional and he could return to office.

Han Duck Soo’s interim

Meanwhile, Premier Han Duck Soo has assumed the interim presidency, managing government functions until the court’s decision. His role is crucial to ensuring the country’s political stability at this time of uncertainty.

Yoon’s absence at the questioning was reported by South Korean news agency Yonhap, which highlighted the tense political and institutional climate across South Korea, exacerbated by allegations of attempted bribery and abuse of power.
