Blackout in Cannes a few hours before the end of the Festival: a fire is to blame

Power outage in southwest France, Festival area affected. No risk for the final ceremony according to the organisers

A sudden power outage hit Cannes and part of south-west France today, just hours before the closing ceremony of the Film Festival. According to the organisers, the closing event is not at risk and will take place as normal.

The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirmed that a major power outage affected the western sector of the region. Initial reconstructions, provided by gendarmerie sources, indicate that the blackout may have been caused by a fire, possibly of arson origin.

Technical checks and investigations to clarify the exact dynamics of the incident remain ongoing, while the gradual restoration of electricity in the affected areas continues.
