Colombia: Miguel Uribe, presidential candidate shot in an ambush, has died

Shot in the head in an attack in June, he passed away after two months of agony

The conservative candidate for the presidency of Colombia, Miguel Uribe Turbay, died at the age of 39 following serious injuries sustained on 7 June, when he was shot in the head during a rally in Bogota. Admitted to intensive care, he underwent several surgeries, but his condition never improved. The news was announced by his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, in a message on Instagram: “You will always be the love of my life. Thank you for a life full of love. Rest in peace, my love. I will take care of our children”.

International condolences
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed ‘deep sorrow’ at Uribe’s passing, assuring that ‘the United States stands in solidarity with his family and the Colombian people, both in mourning and in seeking justice for those responsible.’

The Italian reaction
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also spoke of a ‘tragic day for Colombia and for those who fight for freedom and democracy throughout Latin America’, expressing Italy’s closeness to the family and condemning ‘this atrocious act of violence’.
