Donald Trump allegedly threatened Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping with direct attacks on Moscow and Beijing if they launched military offensives in Ukraine or Taiwan. This was revealed by CNN, citing previously unpublished audio recordings dating back to 2024 and collected during private meetings with wealthy donors ahead of the presidential election.
According to the broadcaster, the then Republican candidate told Putin: “If you go into Ukraine, I will carpet bomb Moscow. I have no choice,” but complained that the Russian president “did not believe him”.

He reportedly used similar words towards Chinese President Xi Jinping, threatening a military response against Beijing in the event of an attack on Taiwan.

Revelations from the book “2024”
Trump’s statements are contained in a series of audio recordings obtained by journalists Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager and Isaac Arnsdorf, and described in their book “2024”. The files were reportedly recorded during fundraisers in New York and Florida and have never been made public until now. Trump’s campaign has declined to comment on the content.

‘Kick out the protesting students’
In the audio recordings, Trump also promised to crack down on pro-Palestinian university protests, stating: “One thing I would do is kick any student who protests out of the country”. These words were spoken in private during a second fundraiser, with the aim, he said, of “stopping everything”.

The Kremlin: “Trump has a rude style”
The response from Moscow came through spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who downplayed Trump’s tone: “He is known for using a rude style in his statements. The Kremlin is calm,” he said, avoiding fuelling direct controversy.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that if he had been in the White House, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza would not have broken out. He continues to reiterate this line as he tries to present himself as the only leader capable of ending the ongoing conflicts, even resorting – as the audio recordings reveal – to diplomacy by threat.
