Elon Musk says goodbye to politics: ‘Disappointed, under attack and ready to return to Tesla’

Billionaire holds back on political engagement (at least for now) after criticism, declining popularity and fears for his and family members’ safety

Disillusioned with politics, frustrated by his lack of results and worried about his own and his loved ones’ safety: this is the portrait of Elon Musk that emerges from a Washington Post investigation. The founder of Tesla and SpaceX has reportedly decided to take a step back from the political scene, stung by the strong negative reactions aroused by his involvement in Washington affairs.

According to sources quoted by the US newspaper, the decline in his personal popularity and the boomerang effect on his companies’ image have prompted Musk to reconsider his public exposure. The entrepreneur is said to have been surprised by the intensity of the criticism, even from circles traditionally close to him on an ideological or industrial level.

Musk has announced a reduction in his political donations and clarified that his direct engagement in the US capital will be limited to two days a week, now focusing on his technology ventures, with particular attention to the development of Tesla and SpaceX’s new space projects.

A retreat that seems to be dictated by fatigue from fighting on several fronts, but also by a strategic calculation: friction with public opinion and the fear of repercussions on an economic and personal level have led Musk to reassess the limits of his political activism.
