Kate Middleton pays homage to Lady Diana with a navy look at the christening of HMS Glasgow

The Princess of Wales evokes Lady D’s iconic style at the ceremony in the Scottish shipyard: blue and white details and a personal touch in the shoes

Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the naming ceremony of HMS Glasgow, held at the BAE Systems shipyard in Scotstoun, Scotland. The event, already full of significance for the British Royal Navy, also attracted attention for the timeless elegance of the Princess of Wales.

Kate chose a dress in blue and white tones, embellished with a matching cap, in what appeared to be a clear tribute to the UK’s maritime tradition. But the most subtle homage was to Lady Diana: the look explicitly recalls some of Prince William’s mother’s most iconic outfits, worn between the 1980s and 1990s, especially in terms of the structured straps and colour choice.

Although inspired by a specific style, the princess introduced a personal note by choosing nude-coloured suede pumps, rather than strictly matching the dress, as Diana did. A detail that made the ensemble more modern and consistent with her usual style.

This is not the first time Kate has taken her cues from Lady D’s wardrobe. Although they have never met, the Princess of Wales has often reinterpreted her mother-in-law’s aesthetic codes with respect and sophistication, suggesting a continuity of style within the royal family.
