UK asylum scam BBC investigation: migrants told to pose as gay
BBC probe uncovers network charging thousands to fabricate asylum claims based on sexual orientation
A UK asylum scam exposed by a BBC investigation reveals a network of legal advisers and consultancies charging migrants thousands of pounds to pose as gay in order to extend their stay in Britain.
According to the BBC News inquiry, migrants with visas nearing expiration—students and tourists among them—were instructed to fabricate claims of persecution based on sexual orientation. The strategy was designed to secure asylum protections available to individuals who could face harm if returned to their home countries.
The scheme relied on constructing false case files. Medical certificates, letters of support, and staged evidence were provided alongside invented personal histories to support applications. Claims often cited the risk of repercussions in countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, where same-sex relationships are illegal.
The investigation indicates that the practice was not isolated. Legal consultants allegedly exploited the asylum system by targeting migrants whose visas had expired or who had recently entered the country without authorization. In one case highlighted by the BBC, a firm demanded £7,000 to prepare a false asylum application, assuring clients that the likelihood of rejection was low.
