LIVE – Over a thousand agents and volunteers deployed for the event on Sunday 11 May, following the Pontiff’s private visit to the sanctuary of Genazzano and the tomb of Pope Francis

Today, Sunday 11 May, Pope Leo XIV will lead the Regina Coeli prayer for the first time as Pontiff from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, at 12 noon. About 150,000 faithful are expected for the occasion. There will be an impressive deployment of police forces, rescue workers and Civil Protection volunteers to guarantee assistance and safety. The installation of maxi screens in the square is also planned.

On the eve of the recitation of the Regina Coeli, Pope Prevost made two surprise visits: the first to the shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Genazzano, near Rome; the second to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he stopped in prayer in front of the icon of the Salus Populi Romani and the tomb of Pope Francis.

In the morning, from 10 a.m. to noon, Leo XIV met the cardinals in the Synod’s New Hall, publicly explaining his choice of name as Pope. ‘I would like us to renew our adherence to the path of the Church in the wake of the Second Vatican Council,’ he said, citing the fundamental principles of Evangelii gaudium and recalling the primacy of Christ, mission, synodality, the sensus fidei and care for the last.

The reference to Leo XIII, he said, is linked to the encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the social question at the end of the 19th century: ‘Today we are living through a new industrial revolution marked by artificial intelligence. The Church is called to offer answers that defend human dignity, justice and work’.
