Trump aims to tighten control over federal hiring with new directives

The Trump administration centralises decisions on hiring and firing, with the Federal Personnel Office at the forefront. Agencies will have to comply by 2026

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is implementing new measures to centralise control over the hiring and firing of federal employees. Decisions will now be handled by the Office of Personnel Management, with a focus on “faithful administration of the law and the president’s policies”. The plan is to be adopted by federal agencies by the beginning of the 2026 fiscal year, as stated in two memos signed by Acting Director Chuck Ezell.
